August First Friday Art Walk in Ukiah

Grace Hudson Museum 431 S Main St The Grace Hudson Museum will be hosting a special First Friday on August 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, when we celebrate the installation of a commissioned Pomo Fish Basket sculpture in the Museum’s Wild Gardens. Dry Creek Pomo/Bodega Miwok artist Bruce Smith will be on hand to discuss the inspiration and process that went into making a six-foot long sculpture out of steel that intricately simulates the traditional weaving technique used by Pomo basket makers. The sculpture is not only a beautiful work of art, but will be a key element in the Wild Gardens for teaching visitors about the importance of salmon habitats and the role of salmon in Pomo culture. Brief remarks occur at 6:00. And from 5:30 to 7:30, bites of a traditional Pomo salmon and seaweed dish will be available to try. Throughout the evening, youth and adults can also learn how to make their own fish basket or bittern doll out of tule reeds. And the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District will be on hand with information about protecting watershed health and stream restoration. Ukiah Valley Networking Agency 304 N State Street Timothy Poma Ukiah native, Tim S. Poma, has been throwing paint at canvases in creative ways for over four years now. In the beginning of discovering he enjoyed painting, many said his style was very reminiscent of Jackson Pollock. From that initial stage of chaotic paint flinging, he continued to focus his energy towards making his creations more recognizable. Now he recreates abstract versions of reality on canvas with latex paint using nothing more than his hands, a stick or a squeeze bottle full of vibrant colors. A visit to Poma’s studio would bring you face to face with the artist; barefoot and elbows deep in a can of paint. A combination of finger painting and dripping colors all contribute to his very unique style. Ukiah Public Library 105 North Main Street Join us for the First Friday Art Walk and view beautiful local quilts made by Mendocino Quilt Artists and the Rag Tag Quilters. There will also be hands-on crafting of marbling paper artwork. Enjoy live music by Richard Jeske and browse a book sale by the Ukiah Valley Friends of the Library. This event is free to the public, open for all ages and sponsored by the Ukiah Valley Friends of the Library.

A biography by Elizabeth Crawford;: I was born and raised in Mendocino County, mostly east of Hopland in McDowell Valley. I couldn’t wait to see the world and left at 18 for college. After finishing my BA at UC Davis, I lived in France and San Francisco. After many years living elsewhere, I couldn’t wait to return to Mendocino County to raise my children. Insatiably curious about the world we live in, with a passion for education and helping people, I endeavored to pass along this life-long love of learning to others. After an MA in History and 20+ years of teaching, I returned to Sonoma State for my Master’s in Counseling and am in the process of finishing my 3000 hours to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. My art has been both a healing panacea and powerful self-care strategy; I can lose myself the creative process and it helps to balance the sometimes-painful stories I hear from my clients.I began doing mosaic mirrors after meeting my husband, Peter, who was also a mosaic artist. My beloved Mendocino County never fails to nourish, excite and inspire me. Our spectacular Mendocino County coast and, most particularly, the town of Elk with its distinctive rocks, have always felt like my spiritual home and are reflected in many of my mirrors. Duncan’s Peak in Hopland; the vineyards of my childhood and my mother and husband’s gardens have also been favorite themes. A voracious reader (a love shared by both of my children), books have been both passion and escape; even an inspiration for one of my mirrors – The Secret Garden – which I lovingly made with my daughter Michaela in mind. My beloved husband, Peter and my two children: AJ and Michaela, have been my greatest gifts and my most profound muses; the joy I have felt through them I believe is reflected in my art.
George Houg is a lake county artist for 7 years, and a mendocino county
artist for 25 years prior to that. His only formal art instruction was
while in the US Navy in 1965 when he enrolled in theFamous Artist
Commercial Art Course. Beyond that, his only other education over the last
50 years hasw come from PBS television shows and a few art books.George’s
main areas of interest are in western, marine, and railroad genres, and
when one views the body of his work, one realizes he is documenting bygone
eras.This is however, the unintentional result of simply painting
whatever strikes his fancy at the time.

Her most recent collection of watercolors expresses the impact of wine country, Mendocino County, California and of Northern California. The finished works radiate with intense contrasts and clarity of vision. Dorothy’s travels to Europe, Japan and throughout the U.S. provided inspiration for her works, which hang in private and corporate collections in the U.S.and Japan.
