April First Friday Art Walk in Ukiah
Art Center Ukiah 201 S State Street “Art for the Garden” – a month long fundraiser for Art Center Ukiah. Artists have donated sculpture, mosaic works, wood works, steel figures and ceramic pieces to celebrate spring with art to enhance nature. Items will be auctioned by silent bids. Art Center Ukiah is celebrating their 10th year of bringing community to the arts. Silent auction ends April 27th.
Corner Gallery 201 S State Street The Corner Art Gallery is featuring an auction in support of the Caring Kitchen Project beginning on the First Friday Art Walk in April. You are invited to come out to bid on these beautifully intricate and festive birdhouses worthy of enhancing your backyard habitat or adding to an indoor art collection. Your bid will contribute to the Caring Kitchen Project’s healing meals for cancer patients, as well as show your appreciation for local art. Winning bidders will be announced on April 30th.
Grace Hudson Museum 431 S Main Street The Grace Hudson Museum will be hosting a family-friendly printmaking workshop, focusing on plant and flower imagery, as part of the First Friday Artwalk on April 6 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The workshop is free and is being offered in conjunction with the Museum’s current exhibition, “Beauty and the Beast: California Wildflowers and Climate Change,” featuring exquisite photographs of California wildflowers while raising awareness of threats to their natural habitats.
W Real Estate 101 N State Street Ben ‘Tsunami’ Lukas has been blowing glass in Northern California since 2004. Born and raised in the Ukiah Valley Ben Had a lifelong fascination with the glassblowing process. By working side jobs in high school Tsunami earned the funds to buy a bead making starter kit which included a ‘Nortel’ minor torch, A bead making book, and a new way of viewing the world – Through Glass. After a year of melting blobs of ‘soft’ glass color, Tsunami began a borosilicate glass apprenticeship at the ‘Irie Sun – Temple Of Glass Arts’. During his apprenticeship the young glass artist also attended Mendocino College. Finishing his AA and the apprenticeship at Irie Sun led Tsunami Lukas to make the critical life decision of moving to Chico, Ca. Where he eventually Graduated California State University, Chico with a BA in Psychology and a second Bachelor Degree in Studio Art, with a Glass Emphasis.
Tsunami took one year of school off at the end of 2010 to embark on an entrepreneurial adventure based around distributing Glass Alchemy color rods, in Egypt. After a few ‘real life’ insights and business plan modifications Tsunami set a goal to teach a group of Egyptian Artisans to use the Glass Alchemy color rods to create Egyptian style perfume bottles. Everything was going fairly well for Mr. Lukas on his first attempt at an international business until January 25th, 2011, when the Egyptian Revolution began. Disregarding the advice of his parents and his government Tsunami decided to stay in Egypt for as long as he could through the duration of the revolution. After Two and a half weeks of riots and social unrest, Mubarak resided, signaling a victory to the people of Egypt and an end to the revolution.
Tsunami has since continued his adventures around the world including the project ‘Egypt Through the Glass Shop‘ and can be seen spending most his time in his studio in Northern California
Ukiah Valley Networking Agency 304 N State Street The featured artist will be Kelly Foutz she was drawn to the Hawaiian Islands to cultivate her passion. Studying studio art at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, she has dedicated over ten years to the love affair found where land meets ocean. Mauka to Makai is about the birthplace of life: The complimentary dynamic of yin and yang and the balance of opposing forces. Like jewels the sea sparkles; oscillations of blues, greens, grays. “I love to capture the endless combinations. The sea itself is a living painting.” There will be appetizers and beverages and a great networking opportunity.
Ukiah Public Library 105 North Main Street On Friday April 6th from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm the Mendocino County Library, Ukiah Branch is hosting First Friday Art Walk and Almost Fringe Festival. There are many ways to express your creativity at the Ukiah Library this April. You can create art work inspired by the printed word, make a Xerox transfer print, or express yourself through the spoken word at our Pop-up Poetry reading. Leave your artistic creations to be put on display all month long. Sponsored by the Ukiah Valley Friends of the Library.
Museum of Encountered Objects 110 W Clay St will have 3 anonymous 24″ bronze fully empowered Sino-Tibetan Buddhist statues of uncertain date and provenance. They have unusual presence.
Bona Marketplace 116 West Standley Street Our featured artist for the month of April will be Gerard Borromeo, a very talented student of the Academy of Arts School in San Francisco. Gerard paints fun figure models in watercolor and are framed large pieces. Also performing for us on Standley St. will be Charlotte Dickson, Ukiah’s talented Indie Pop musician, singer & songwriter.
Arts Council of Mendocino County 309 E Perkins Street hosts the Deep Valley Arts Collective.
Multiple members of the Collective will be showing their art inside the building. Outside there will be
live entertainment by Weird Year and Ethiopian food provided by Tenadam Catering
Live Performance by Space – School of Performing Arts at 5:30pm and 6:00pm on the corner of Perkins
and Main Street
The Ukiah High School Marching Band will also be traveling around the event and performing at various
locations.
