Join artists and their hosts for an evening of art, music and refreshments as you stroll from one venue to the next; each showcasing local art and artistry. Held in Historic Downtown Ukiah on the first Friday of each month, the First Friday Art Walk is the perfect way to relax your body, mind and soul. This enjoyable evening begins at 5:00 p.m. and promises to delight your senses; all while enjoying the company of others.

Art Center Ukiah 201 S School Street Art Center Ukiah features juried art show “GAIA” art works reflecting the two symbols of our current environmental movements – The goddess Gaia the ancestral mother of all life; the primal Mother Earth goddess. And the first Earth Day 1972, activated 20 million Americans widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Opening reception Friday April 5 5 pm – 8 pm refreshments and live music with Chris Gibson. Exhibits ends April 27th
Visit Mendocino 105 W Clay Street Visit Mendocino County Announces Grand Opening Celebration Visit Mendocino County (VMC) which serves as the County’s tourism marketing organization, has moved its main location from Fort Bragg to Ukiah which brings it closer them county offices and resources. They will still maintain a presence on the Coast in the same Fort Bragg location and has partnered with West Business Development Center to share the space. Friday, April 5 from 5-8 pm, you are invited join VMC and Art Walk Ukiah at the new office located at 105 West Clay St. Meet the team and learn what VMC does on behalf of Mendocino County. This evening experience will engage all your senses. Artwork will feature Jim Persky of Clay Street Pottery, Tim S. Poma, George Byron, Vincent Jones and a host of other local artists. The Mendocino College Culinary Arts Department will create tasteful delights to enjoy. Sip on sparkling from Roederer Estate and an array of wines from Barra of Mendocino while the flute music of George Husaruk fills the air. It’s springtime! A time for celebration. Please support our community and visit not only VMC’s new office, but the many other downtown businesses that participate in this monthly Art Walk Ukiah event. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a night out in our historic downtown Ukiah, connect with friends and make new ones.

Grace Hudson Museum 431 S Main Street As part of Ukiah’s First Friday Art Walk, and in conjunction with our special exhibition, Gathering Light: The Photographic Visions of Aryan Chappell, Roger Franklin, Amy Melious, and Robert Taylor, the Grace Hudson Museum will screen the 2014 film Tim’s Vermeer. Produced by illusionists Penn & Teller, this intriguing documentary explores how optical devices may have helped Dutch master painter Johannes Vermeer achieve his spectacular sense of visual realism. Inventor Tim Jenison theorizes about this and then employs a technique using mirrors and an early camera obscura to duplicate some of Vermeer’s hallowed paintings. Art historians are split on whether Vermeer used optical technologically to create his masterpieces. Revelation or hoax? You decide. The Museum will be open during the evening from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Visitors can check out Gathering Light and our other galleries, and stroll through the Wild Gardens, which should be blooming with poppies and other flowers. Tim’s Vermeer screens at 6:00 PM and is roughly one hour and twenty minutes in length. The screening and entrance to the Museum is free and open to the general public.

Linda Malone, new work “Transitions” The show will highlight both watercolors and acrylic paintings that revolve around natural themes. “When I was younger, I painted in acrylic, oil and watercolor. Then for many years, while working and raising a family, I painted exclusively in watercolors. About three years ago, I decided to experiment with painting again in acrylics and began studying with Lisa Rosenstreich at Mendocino College,” Ms. Malone explained.
“The result has been an expansion of my range of work and formats. It has been exciting to work on a larger scale and with a medium that allows for an infinite amount of experimentation.”
“The theme transitions is not just about the before and after, but also about the spaces in between. The space between the exhale of breathe and the beginning of the next one. The space between a joint and bone, the breaking of a wave and the water flowing back into the ocean, between the cessation of one thought and the beginning of the next one. When we pay close attention we start to experience a richer reality. One of the gifts of being a painter is learning to really see.”
Bona Marketplace 116 W Standley Street Bona will be hosting Bev Rae. The photographs Bev will be presenting on March 1st will be up and on display through May and represent her latest photographic interest. Taking photographs at night requires knowledge, skill and luck. When everything comes together it can be magical. The photographs in this show are all taken after sunset and before sunrise. The full moon can be used to light the scene naturally. Cloudy nights can add unexpected interest. Moonless nights are for photographing the Milky Way Core. I hope you enjoy the wonders of the night sky and take the time to look up at the stars.

They gain self-esteem and confidence as their ideas come to fruition and when their work is appreciated by the general public.
