Gallery 201 S State St For the month of
November, the Gallery will feature the weaving of
Stephanie Hoppe.
“Twenty years ago,” Hoppe said, “I began weaving with rugs, on a
Navajo-style loom that produces pieces with selvages on all four sides.
Although I now predominately weave tapestries, I often return
to rug weaving, as
I like the discipline of the piece needing to be evenly and tightly
woven for good wear as well as to lie flat and square on the floor. But
the techniques I use for rugs and tapestries are the same, and
freedom from the
practical restraints of rugs does allow greater experimentation with
design—which I also enjoy.” This show features several of Hoppe’s larger
rugs, together with large and small tapestries and a number of the very
small works (10 inches by 10 inches)
