The “dog days of summer” is a phrase made popular during the time of the Roman Empire, thousands of years ago. It refers to the rising and falling of Sirius, known as the “Dog Star,” during the hot and stifling summer months of July and August. Local artists are providing some creative responses to the intense heat of our inland climate.  Woodcut prints, etchings, fabric art, photographs, paintings and sculpture. The First Friday opening on August from 5-8pm featuring music Michael Oberg.

Corner Gallery Ukiah August 2024 “Place, Story, Vision: Two Viewpoints”, 201 S State Street, Ukiah

The Anderson Valley artist couple, Marvin and Colleen Schenck, will present their unique views of realism and fantasy.  Working in collage, painting, printmaking, and drawing, they create images from views on scenic daily walks to flights of fantasy inspired from discarded media images and found objects.

Colleen’s two-dimensional works include her imaginative mixed media photo collages and her larger, colored pencil drawings. Her delicate realist finesse in that media is reminiscent of her craftsman touch in another art passion, creating jewelry. Marvin’s main art subject is the landscape. He enjoys the variety of views available in Mendocino County. His colorful acrylic and watercolor works employ a lively expressionist point of view seeking the sole of nature in the scene. His love of color sometimes bursts out as a series of bright abstract images. Also imaginative, are his story collage series that span themes of fantasy, political history, and the lives of his ancestors.
