Corner Gallery “Wall of 1000 Chickens” – Friday, June 6th, 5-8 PM

William Shi, will host a one-man public-art-in-action project at the gallery, creating a large-scale painting featuring one thousand chickens. The painting will be 18 feet wide and 9 feet high, so it’s certain to attract more than a little attention as it progresses. William explains, “This visual representation will hopefully serve as a call to action, urging people to reexamine our agricultural systems and advocate for sustainable farming practices. I hope people will see me working and think about the issue in a way they haven’t before.” William is inspired to create art as for call for awareness of plight the chicken as the bird flu purged thousands of chickens across the world.

Medium Art Center: “Consume” Juried Art Show – Friday, June 6th, 5-8 PM

MEDIUM Art Center (formerly Deep Valley Arts Collective) invites the community to experience  Consume,  a juried group exhibition exploring the many dimensions of consumption, both literal and abstract. This show will open during the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Ukiah.

Artists were encouraged to interpret the theme broadly. Submissions will reflect on consumer culture, appetite, material waste, capitalism, addiction, sustainability, or the psychological and environmental impacts of consumption. Work will also approach the theme through assemblage or reuse, where the act of consuming becomes part of the creative process, transforming discarded objects into new visual narratives.

An opening reception will be held on First Friday, June 6th, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. during Ukiah’s First Friday Art Walk. Invite your friends and family to a fun community event that supports the arts.

There will be music, light food, and drinks.

There will be a community interactive consumption-themed project that begins at the opening and continues throughout the show’s duration. Bring your (clean) waste to pin to the piece – for example: store receipts, packaging, tchotchkes, discarded mail, old clothing, etc.

Opening reception: Friday, June 6th, 2025, 5:00-8:00 PM PDT.

The show runs through Saturday, June 28th, 2025.

Medium Art Center is located at 518 East Perkins Street, Ukiah, in the Pear Tree Center.

The Ukiah Branch Library – Friday, June 6th, 5-7 PM
“We Are You: Voices of the Unhoused”
The Ukiah Branch Library invites the community to join us for Art Walk Ukiah on Friday, June 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. The library will feature a group art exhibition by the Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center. This art show is designed to give an expressive voice to the unhoused in Ukiah.

Unhoused people are perhaps the most marginalized population in most communities. Studies by UCSF have found that 78-82% of unhoused people have deep roots in their current area. Many are working people or students who live out of their cars or “couch surf.” An increasing percentage of the unhoused population are seniors. The staggering reality is that we are all potentially one job loss, weather event, or major medical bill away from losing our home. This exhibition highlights this shared vulnerability and aims to break down the barriers of stigma and outsider status because truly, We Are You.

Local artists Janet Rosen, Laura Fogg, Betty Lacy, and Melissa Eleftherion Carr have led workshops with clients and residents of Building Bridges since July 2024, along with the support and vision of the Building Bridges staff. The exhibition utilizes a range of mediums – including painting, mixed media, fiber, textile, and poetry – to allow the workshop participants to express their visions, personal stories, and humanity. The finished art pieces will be curated and installed in public venues throughout Ukiah. We invite you to take part in this important community event.

The Branch will host live music by Clay Hawkins. Guests can enjoy an all-ages collage crafting program and a book sale by the Ukiah Valley Friends of the Library as they browse the Art Walk. Fill up a bag of books for just $5. This exhibition is free to the public, open to all ages, and is sponsored by the generous support of the Ukiah Valley Friends of the Library and Mendocino County Library.

The Grace Hudson MuseumFriday, June 6th from 5-8 PM

Make the Museum part of your Ukiah First Friday Art Walk in June. Visitors will be able check out our latest exhibition, The Art of Wonder, which opened on May 23. It features 15 contemporary Mendocino County artists working in diverse mediums. Their artwork may connect one to a place of spirituality, to the rhythms of nature, or to pondering the particles and energy that comprise the building blocks of our universe. Some of the art will stimulate in the viewer a fleeting moment of clarity around the mysteries of life, love, and other deep emotions, maybe even to a stronger appreciation for our shared humanity. Enjoy the show while hearing the beautiful sounds of popular harpist Suni Robin, who sometimes is accompanied by another musician.  You’ll also be able to spend time discovering or getting reacquainted with our core galleries, featuring Grace Hudson’s artwork, exquisite Pomo basketry, and Carpenter-Hudson family history. Also enjoy spring wildflowers in our Wild Gardens. Light refreshments will be available.  First Fridays at the Grace Hudson Museum are always free all day and evening.
