October 2023 First Friday Art Walk

ART WALK: emphasis on ART and WALK. Ukiah is a very walkable town.

Join artists and their hosts for an evening of art, music and refreshments as you stroll from one venue to the next; each showcasing local art and artistry. Held in Historic Downtown Ukiah on the first Friday of each month, the First Friday Art Walk is the perfect way to relax your body, mind and soul. This enjoyable evening begins at 5:00 p.m. and promises to delight your senses; all while enjoying the company of others. 

Corner Gallery, 201 South State Street, Ukiah

At the Corner Gallery, well-known local painters Polly Palecek and Elaine Richard will be featured in the front windows of the Corner Gallery for the month of October. They have the kind of friendship that leads them to work together, and this show named “Friends with Brushes” is the result of that close collaboration: inside, new gallery member Meelah Dorhosti will show both ceramics and paintings; young artist, Kaleigh McEntree acrylic paintings brings lots of color to the gallery: Diana Steele and Cindy Lindgren will share the pony wall space sponsored by to the MCAA. Both are well known to gallery patrons, and will be showing new works. Gallery members always bring something new. For the opening reception First Friday, 5-8, live music will be provided throughout the evening by Steve Winkle.

Art Center Ukiah, 201 South State Street, Ukiah

Art Center Ukiah, the community gallery,”In Disguise” celebrates month of Halloween exhibiting the art of mask making showcasing the originality and beauty of hand-crafted masks. A variety of fun, crazy, delightful or downright macabre masks will be on display, some created from unexpected (and possibly even unwearable) materials. Masks, either art pieces or wearable disguises are original creations by local masters of the craft. Of particular interest to locals will be a number of masks contributed by the Ukiah Players Theater. Crafted as costumes for productions such as Alice in Wonderland, many of these masks are spectacular works of art in their own right. Opening reception Friday 5pm – 8pm live music with Steve Winkle

Grace Hudson Museum, 431 S Main Street, Ukiah  

Make the Museum one of your stops on your Ukiah First Friday Art Walk. It will be the last First Friday opportunity to see our hugely popular special exhibition, Something’s Happening Here: Artistic Reflections on the Back to the Land Movement. Singer/guitarist/songwriter, Yoli Rose, returns to provide live music, this time with her band Redbud. The group will perform eclectic rock, originals, and covers. (You will definitely want to bring your dancing shoes.) In addition to Something’s Happening Here, discover or get reacquainted with our core galleries featuring Grace Hudson’s artwork, exquisite Pomo basketry, and Hudson-Carpenter family history; or take an autumn evening stroll in our Wild Gardens. Light refreshments will be served. 

MEDIUM Art Gallery, 522 E Perkins Street, Ukiah 

Come read a story, sing a song, recite a favorite poem or any other short performance. All ages are

welcome. Drinks and snacks are available wine donated by Saracina Vineyards.

Our current exhibition, Skulls & Bones, is on display through October, 22, 2023. The autumn season has traditionally been associated with skull and bone imagery, representing mortality, death, transformation, regeneration, and decay themes. Artists were prompted to submit various works interpreting this theme, with encouragement to think outside the box.

Community Altar: Join us to build our community altar. Bring something or create something to add to the

altar in remembrance of those who have passed away, but are not forgotten.

Bona will be hosting the Grapevine Quilters Guild. Come and see their latest creations and learn more about quilting and all about what it takes to create these beautiful pieces.

The Lot on Main, corner of Standley and Main Street

New artists and crafters each month, if you are looking for variety they have it at “The Lot”. Join the Lot as they celebrate the season with Pumpkin Carving. The Cosmic Family Band will be providing live music for your enjoyment. 

Mendocino County Library, 105 N Main Street, Ukiah 

Come enjoy an multi-disciplinary exhibit by local artists Phaedra Craig, Kathleen Miller Thomas, and Susan Walker. This exhibit will be on display at the Ukiah Branch Library September 1st  through October 27th. The Branch will host live music by The Jazz Dudes. There will be an in-person hands-on creative arts program. Enjoy a book sale by the Ukiah Valley Friends of the Library as you browse the art walk. This exhibit is free to the public, open to all ages, and sponsored by the Ukiah Valley Friends of the Library and Mendocino County Library.
