ART WALK: emphasis on ART and WALK. Ukiah is a very walkable town.Join artists and their hosts for an evening of art, music and refreshments as you stroll from one venue to the next; each showcasing local art and artistry. Held in Historic Downtown Ukiah on the first Friday of each month, the First Friday Art Walk is the perfect way to relax your body, mind and soul. This enjoyable evening begins at 5:00 p.m. and promises to delight your senses; all while enjoying the company of others.

Grace Hudson Museum 431 S Main Street August First Friday at the Grace Hudson Museum kicks off the final weekend of our popular exhibition, Tattooed and Tenacious: Inked Women in California’s History. As a special treat, Hilary from Hilary’s Henna will be at the Museum doing henna tattoos for our visitors. Hilary is a Certified Natural Henna Artist. She makes her henna paste completely from plant-based materials, resulting in wearable art that will last from one to three weeks. Not quite ready to make a commitment to a permanent tattoo? Why not try a henna tattoo by Hilary, courtesy of the Grace Hudson Museum. We’ll be open from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Come at 4:30 or 5:30 and enjoy our final Wild Gardens foraging walks of the summer. Plus Little Bear will be in the house with his interactive table of Native American tools and toys. If you haven’t seen Tattooed and Tenacious, this weekend will be your last chance, as the show must close on August 4. Organized by Exhibit Envoy and supplemented with material from the Grace Hudson Museum and other collections, Tattooed and Tenacious explores the largely unknown story of women in the tattoo arts, from the Tattooed Ladies of the early 20th century, to tattoo traditions in California Native cultures, to art and flash by contemporary women tattoo artists. First Fridays at the Museum are always Free; this includes the foraging walks and henna tattoos.

Corner Gallery 201 S State St The featured artists for the month of August for the Corner Gallery are Don Pagano and Michael Layborn, both former members of the gallery who passed away in the last year. Don loved painting every day and said painting was his secret to longevity. One of his accomplishments was his ability to paint every day until the day he passed away at age 96. Don was a longtime member of the Ukiah Valley Artist Association and was an active Corner Gallery member for three years at its beginning. Gallery members recall how generous he was in helping artists learn to sell their art work. He also contributed to numerous juried art shows sponsored by Art Center Ukiah. Michael was interested in art from an early age. He studied art in high school with his friends, Bob Hudson and William Wiley. He continued in college in Arizona and later in Mexico. His eye for art had a positive influence on his work at Faralones Designs in Berkley and later at Mariposa School and Mendocino Brewing in Ukiah. His works include paintings, abstract sculptures, and photography.

Bona Marketplace 116 W Standley Street “Vita di Vetro” (Life of Glass) My love for glass is as natural as the forms my art often takes. Since my earliest days the glass blowing process of using fire to achieve sculpture has fascinated my spirit. The pursuit of mastering an art form, both ancient and modern, has tantalized my Mind. The torment of failing a piece and the energetic elation of executing a new technique has been a blessing to my body. Constantly inspired by the array of beautiful lifeforms across nature, I feel most successful when my glass pieces become alive with color and personality. From ocean dwelling beasts, to birds of flight, and reptilian lifeforms in between I aim to bring my own version of a simple beauty to the world. I am honored to be considered and am proud to present “Vita Di Vetro” (Life of Glass) at Bona Marketplace in Ukiah. -Ben Lukas Ben Lukas Has been studying glass since 2004 when he purchased his first glassblowing starter kit at the age of 17. Armed with a ‘how-to make beads’ book and a small studio space in his Ukiah back yard a whimsical Lukas set out on a journey that would forever change the lens of his perspective. Since finishing a Studio Art Degree at California State University, Chico, Ben has opened his own store ‘Tsunami’s Glass Shop’ in the Train Depot Mall in Fort Bragg. You can find him blowing glass in downtown Fort Bragg Thursday through Monday 10-5. “It’s amazing continuing the legacy of glass blowing in the downtown mall started 25 years ago”

Ukiah Valley Networking Agency 104 N School Street Adrianna Oberg is a local artist specializing in detailed pen illustration and abstract watercolor portraits. Her work is characterized by strong emotional technique with a dreamlike influence over the human experience. She’s been working for ten years + on her artistic talent and strives to create more pieces that better express the vibrancy of raw emotion.
